Gunbike Erdemir

Günbike Erdemir is a visual artist based between Brussels and Bodrum. Her drawing practice extends the bounds of paper and travels through different shapes, materials, and media. In her practice drawings and sculptures reframe narratives drawn from tales and history into contemporary and intimate settings, addressing themes such as death, desire, queer eroticism, and voyeurism. Her narrative-driven pieces, populated with figures and suggestive architectural motifs, enhance the scenery of each story and the world she constructs.

Erdemir draws significant inspiration from the works of underground queer writers, whose stylistic prose and fearless, transgressive expressiveness resonate deeply within her art. This influences her contemplations on mythology, storytelling, and the language of sensuality, allowing for multifaceted explorations of roles, mythological tropes, and vulnerability. Text is a fundamental element in her practice, presented through various mediums including printed booklets, fragments in exhibition texts, and within the drawings themselves. It serves as a tool for character creation, narration, and accompaniment, supporting her visualizations.
